The riding enjoyed by the mounted field is challenging, but
well within the capabilities of any reasonably experienced
horse rider. The support and encouragement you will receive
from your companions in the field will soon put you at ease.
Most jumps are welcoming and rarely over 3 ft while the
bigger obstacles like hedges can be ridden around if you
prefer and many people do! Some of our meets have very
little, if any, jumping. A Hunt Secretary can advise you on
these days. You are welcome to hunt with us for up to four
days a season without becoming a subscriber.
The essentials are smart, warm and practical and the
following hints apply to all, regardless of gender.
If you do not have a black hunt coat, a tweed hacking jacket
or black/ dark blue show jacket is acceptable for your
first few outings (but thin material can be cold). With a
black hunt coat, wear a black hat and a white stock (with
pin); with a hacking jacket, wear a black hat and a coloured
stock (with pin) or collar & tie, plus, in all cases,
buff (not white) breeches and long, black riding boots.
Children wear jodhpurs and jodhpur boots. For completeness,
carry a hunting whip.
Safety pins are useful for keeping loose ends of stocks and
ties in place and out of sight!
You will see other folk wearing other variations of hunting
kit, but as a beginner, stick to the advice given above. As
your confidence and curiosity develop, do ask what these
alternatives represent.
There are many keen supporters of hunting who come out on
foot. They are members of The Surrey Union Hunt Supporters
Club, which is an invaluable and intrinsic part of The
Surrey Union. Surrey Union Hunt Supporters Club enquiries

find people to point you in the right direction. Often the
foot followers see more of the hounds working than the
mounted field. Contact a Hunt Secretary via email

following on foot.

It is the intention of the Masters that the Hunt will meet
